UKMT Team Challenge
13/03/2018

The UKMT Team Challenge is aimed at the most able mathematicians in Years 8 & 9. It requires mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication skills in order to compete against teams from other schools across the North West with the winners going on to the National Final in London.

The team (Sam Ellis and Jack Cameron Y8, Adrianna Cooper and Andrew Hoang Y9) had to solve complex problems against the clock in a variety of activities such as ‘Relay’, where they work in pairs and take it in turns to solve problems, and ‘Shuttle’, where teams compete against the clock to correctly answer a series of four questions. Each team is divided into Pair A (given Questions 1 and 3) and Pair B (given Questions 2 and 4). Question 1 can be solved independently of the others, but the answer to each subsequent question is dependent on the previous answer, referred to as T in Questions 2, 3 and 4 (e.g. "T is the number that you will receive").

The team thoroughly enjoyed the day and performed brilliantly, finishing 10th out of 25 schools.

Earlier this year, Adrianna won a Silver Certificate for the UKMT Intermediate Challenge (aimed at pupils from Years 9, 10 and 11.)

Well Done!
