Miss S. Deady-AlstonArt & Design Teacher

The Art & Design Department at Academy@Worden aims to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment with and create their own works of art, craft and design. Students will experience a broad variety of artistic techniques and processes using an extensive range of equipment and media.

Projects at KS3 aim to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the formal elements: line, shape, pattern, colour, tone, mark-making, and texture. Students will explore these concepts through practical experiences under the guidance of a theme, working towards producing a final individual and/or collaborative response.

KS3 Themes:

  • Year 7 - Insects / Architecture
  • Year 8 - Sweet Treats / 3D Art
  • Year 9 – Portraits / Day of the Dead

GCSE Art and Design

Students who opt to take Art & Design at GCSE level will continue to express themselves creatively and learn how to visually communicate their ideas. This GCSE is an excellent option if you enjoy being creative, want to increase your practical skills and improve your analytical and research abilities. Art & Design is a way of seeing things and making sense of the world around you, and communicating your understanding of that work through creative media.

The GCSE Art & Design course is assessed under the AQA Examination Board - students will be marked on their ability to meet four Assessment Objectives, which they will work towards via two components. Component 1 is a portfolio of coursework, with multiple projects based on various themes. Component 2 is an Externally Set Assignment where students choose a theme from a list set out by the exam board.
